Xander's Cross, Oregon: a small town ringed with forbidding mountains and misty forest. The sky may be gray, but the townspeople are welcoming to people of all kinds...and things that are not quite human as well. Here the native shifters, aliens, werewolves, and witches live in peace. They have yet to find out the new business owners encroaching on the land are also vampires.
The peace has been broken by murder, however, and things in Xander's Cross are about to become quite a bit darker.

The mayor, Rowan Starkwood, was found dead less than a mile from his home. Rumors say his body was mutilated, but the state of the body has not yet been released to the public.
There was magic of some kind involved in the Mayors death
The Mayor's chest was cut open with a y incision similar to an autopsy, and his ribs were also cut in order to remove the front of his ribcage and access the heart. Both were done by someone with a knowledge of anatomy and a clear understanding of how to get to what they wanted without damaging it, but NOT BY A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL OR USING THE PROPER TOOLS.
The mayor was alive at the time of his mutilation.
There were small shards of obsidian found on the ground at the scene.

The mayor was murdered by the cult of Erebus, god of Darkness. AKA The Erevan.
This was to fulfill a prophecy that stated that someone who was blessed with the strength of a wolf, the cleverness of a fox, and the charm of a man would be the first sacrifice in order to restore vampires to their rightful place above humanity
The cult has non-Erevan members who have agreed to cooperate because they too believe they are superior to humans and should be allowed to live freely and publicly and that humans are weak and useless.
They needed his heart for their magic, so that's why they killed him the way they did. The magic they used has preserved the heart still beating.
The mayor was was actually involved with the cult up till that point, and had invited them into town. He skimmed money from the tribe's land deal with the mining company.
